Fertilizing and Weed/Insect Control

Grass grows best when it is properly fed. We select the best fertilizer products available and match the right product to suit your lawn's needs. Proper Lawn is very concerned about ground water contamination, so we follow strict manufacturer guidelines for applications.

Our fertilzer program includes treatments for weeds on each visit. A crab grass control is included in the spring application. Some weeds are uncontrollable, such as violets, veronica and others. If your lawn has weeds that cannot be controlled, we will let you know.

Insect control is available on an as-needed basis for an extra fee. Unlike our competitors, we only charge for this service if it is needed. If we find turf-damaging insects in your lawn, we will notify you and let you know what products are available for treatment, so that you may make an informed decision.

Waterfront properties require special consideration for treatments. We have special products for application on waterfront properties, and take great care in applying them.

Core Aeration

Sometimes a lawn will develop a layer of thatch between the soil and the grass blades. Some thatch is desirable, but too much can be a problem. Thick thatch layers can prevent water and nutrients from reaching the roots. It can also harbor turf-damaging insects or be the perfect shelter for a turf grass disease. This picture shows an example of problem thatch.

Thatch can also interfere with root development. This can reduce the performance and vigor a lawn may have.

Compacted soil is also a concern for some people. Grass has trouble growing in soil that is compacted. The problem is made worse with clay soils.

You may also find that your lawn is underperforming. If you feel that your lawn is not reaching its potential appearance then you should consider trying to provoke some root growth.

Core Aeration addresses each of these problems. We use a machine to pull plugs from the lawn. These plugs are left on the lawn to decompose (they take about 2 weeks to break down). The thatch layer is perforated, and the root bed can now get water, air, and nutrients. Soil compaction is reduced, by removing plugs, when the soil knits back together, it will be looser, giving roots some "breathing room" and making it easier for roots to spread out. The root bed is also stimulated to grow, just like pruning a tree will cause some new growth, the removal of some of the root bed will cause a rejuvination of the root system.

Golf courses for years have been aerating seasonally, some even twice a year. If you want more from your lawn, then call or email us and schedule an aeration to be performed.
